Hey guys, I’m Chris and this is Headlight Revolution, and today we are reviewing the newest LED headlight for 7 inch round sealed beam replacements on the market. This is the Vortex LED headlight technology by Vision X, and it is one of the more impressive 7 inch round LED headlight options we have tested. We pulled it out of the box, wired it up, and ran it against the wall so you can see exactly what these Vision X 7 inch LED headlights can do before you buy a set for your Jeep, motorcycle, motorhome, classic car, or hot rod.
What the Vision X Vortex 7 Inch LED Headlight Replaces
The big idea with this light is that it will replace any 7 inch H6024 sealed beam headlight. That is what you find in a lot of older vehicles, industrial vehicles, and military vehicles. It is your standard 7 inch round headlight, and it is even a replacement for the newer Jeep Wrangler that uses factory 7 inch round composite headlights. A sealed beam headlight has the filament sealed inside the housing, so when it burns out you have to replace the whole thing. If you are shopping for a true sealed beam LED headlight replacement, this housing fits any PAR56, H6017, or H6024 7 inch round application.
Vision X is an American company based out of Washington state, and they have a factory for producing all the parts in South Korea. So this product is made in South Korea but designed and engineered in America. If you want to see the broader lineup from Vision X, there is a lot to explore, but the Vortex 7 inch is the one built specifically for this classic round housing.
What Comes in the Box
It comes in a single light kit for a motorcycle, or you can buy it as a two light kit for a motorhome, a classic car, a Jeep, a hot rod, or anything else that has 7 inch round headlights. When we opened our two light kit, the box states that it includes two Vortex 7 inch LED headlights, two identical units, DOT approved and set up for left hand drive right hand traffic, which is the way we drive in America. The packaging is genuinely nice, with a lot of information printed on it so you know exactly what you are buying before you even open it.

Inside the box the lights are packaged individually, so if you bought the single light kit that is all you would get, just the one box. Each light comes with a harness and a plastic tap for the halo wire. Both the housing and the lens have protective plastic sheets over them, which is a nice touch for a product you are going to install and never touch again.
Fully LED Design With Five LEDs
The first thing we always point out is that this headlight is 100 percent LED. It does not use HID, it does not use halogen, and it does not use replaceable light bulbs. The whole housing has integrated LEDs, and there is nothing to ever replace. This is a lifetime type of product. You install it in your vehicle once and you never have to do any maintenance on it again.
It has five LEDs total. The top half moon shape is a reflector with one LED that shoots downward and creates your horizontal spread. You have two smaller LEDs on either side in the middle of the light below the low beam, and those are also part of the low beam, creating a flood effect to fill in extra light. Then you have the two conical shaped reflectors at the bottom, and those are your high beams.

The way it works is simple. Turn on low beam and just the low beams come on. Turn on high beam and just the high beam comes on. Some vehicles energize both circuits at the same time, but if yours only energizes the low beam or the high beam circuit separately, Vision X offers a plug and play quad high beam kit. That extra wire harness lets both headlights run low and high beam together for high beam, which is exactly what you want if your vehicle uses separate low and high circuits.
DOT Approved and Built to Last
At the top of the headlight, behind the lens and embossed in the bezel itself, is the Vision X logo. At the bottom, printed right on the lens, are the three letters DOT, which stands for Department of Transportation. This matters if you want something that is actually legal to use on the highway, or if you are getting inspected and need to know your product is safe and legal for public roads. If DOT compliance is a priority, this is a genuine DOT approved LED headlight with the marking right where inspectors look for it.
Vision X states this headlight is DOT certified, has a hybrid aluminum and polycarbonate housing for extra durability, and uses a UV resistant polycarbonate lens. It carries an IP68 waterproof rating, a stated 50,000 hour lifespan, and an input voltage range of 9 to 32 volts DC.
Low Profile Backside Fits Almost Anything
When we flip the light around, there is really not a whole lot to the backside, and that is a good thing. It is very small and very low profile, probably one of the most low profile LED 7 inch round headlights we have seen. A lot of the ones out there from other brands are made in China or Taiwan and are really bulky on the backside, requiring modification to the vehicle to fit most applications. The Vision X one is low profile enough that it is going to fit anything using a 7 inch round headlight.

On the back you will find three alignment tabs so you cannot install it wrong or upside down, a small protruding section in the middle, and four wires exiting through a waterproof grommet. Since the light is rated IP68, all of the hardware on the back should be sealed to that same rating.
The Wiring Harness and the Built In Halo
The four wires are red, black, white, and blue. Red, black, and blue handle your high and low beam functions. The white wire comes off the harness separately and is your positive trigger wire for the halo. This is the only 7 inch round LED headlight out there that comes with a proper halo already built in. If you tried to add a nice halo to an LED headlight from a different company, you could be looking at upwards of 500 dollars per headlight to get one installed that actually looks good, so having it integrated here is a genuinely cool feature.

Something nobody else is doing: this headlight uses a four pin connector, and you can get different connectors that plug into it. The box indicates options for H9 and H11, which tells us a Harley-Davidson specific harness model should be available. You can get it with the H4 connector for most classic and industrial vehicles, or with H13 if you have a Jeep Wrangler or something that takes an H13. The housing stays one part number, and the connector is what changes. The kit includes the H4 connector, but you can also add an H4 adapter harness that plugs in line to run high and low beam together, and there is a plug and play anti flicker harness adapter for Jeep Wranglers that suffer from the common flickering issues on 2007 to 2014 and up models.
Wiring the Halo
To power everything on the bench, we connect the ground to the black wire, use the blue wire for low beam positive, and the red wire for high beam positive. The white halo wire uses a common ground with the rest of the harness, so as long as a ground is hooked up, the halo will light. Because the headlight itself is already grounded, all you need to do to run the halo is find a good positive wire.

You have a few options for where to wire the halo. You can run it straight to your ignition in the fuse box, tie it to your parking lights, have it turn on with the headlights, or wire it into a switch inside the vehicle for complete control of when it is on and off. It is a nice subtle halo, but bright enough that you definitely know there is a halo in this light.
Beam Pattern Testing on the Wall
To give some perspective on light output, we first showed the original sealed beam housing that this light was designed to replace. The stock 7 inch sealed beam has a yellow, dingy color with weird shadows all over the place, and it is not very wide or tall. It is enough to drive with if you do not want to see anything, but that is about it.

Then we set up the Vision X XIL-7RD at 22 feet from the wall. Even at that short distance, the beam pattern is massive. From the far left corner to the middle there is a strong hot spot, then it fades out to the far right, giving you an absolutely huge wide beam. The color is a pure white, right around 5500K, and it looks fantastic. The band of main output is not very tall, but there is a ton of flood coming off the headlight underneath, almost like an optical illusion that the light is only so tall.

Those two little round LEDs on either side really earn their keep. When we cover them, all we have is the horizontal beam pattern. When we uncover them, the flood opens way up, almost like there is an extra fog light built into the housing to illuminate the foreground. Then we turn on the high beam and it is a wild output that reminds us of a miniature spotlight, very bright with a lot of distance. Normally with LED headlights you have to sacrifice high beam for a nice low beam, but this light kind of has everything.
Specs and Availability
The Vision X Vortex 7 inch round LED headlight runs a 13 watt low beam and a 20 watt high beam rated at 1,720 lumens. DOT approved and DOT certified, the headlight has a hybrid aluminum polycarbonate housing and UV resistant polycarbonate lens, is IP68 waterproof, and has three modes: high beam, low beam, and halo. It carries a 50,000 hour lifespan rating and a 9 to 32 volt DC input range. It is available in a single light kit (XIL-7RD) or a two light kit (XIL-7RD kit). Currently it is available in Chrome, and we have been hearing rumors that a Black option is coming. For pricing and current stock on the full range of Vision X 7 inch LED headlights, we keep everything organized in one place.
How It Compares to the JW Speaker 8700
To put the output in context, we compared it to the other DOT approved 7 inch round LED headlight on the market, the JW Speaker 8700. The JW Speaker is made in America, also carries a lifetime warranty, is DOT approved, and is all LED, so it is a fair comparison. Both are excellent lights, but the beam patterns are noticeably different from each other. The Vision X shows a huge wide low beam with extra flood from its side LEDs and a very strong spotlight style high beam. The JW Speaker 8700 has its own wide pattern where mainly the top section changes between low and high beam. Which one is right for you comes down to how you want that beam laid out, and both are strong upgrades over a sealed beam.
