With everyone from your uncle to the rental lot 3 miles from your house owning a Mustang, it can be hard to stand out in the crowd. Thankfully, Morimoto has you covered with their XB LED Tails (as of 1/10/21 these lights are discontinued) inspired by the 2017 Ford GT taillights.
The classic tri-light design on the stock taillights looks great as is. We believe they are a perfect blend of classic styling with a modern twist. Unfortunately, they can become lost in the crowd and are not very bright. Today we will look at how to install the Morimoto XB LED Tails on your 2015-2021 Mustang S550 and show you all their improvements over stock in terms of output and build quality.
This is not the first time we have outfitted the Morimoto XB LEDs to the Mustang. Previously, we put a set of XB LED headlights that outperformed stock by 28% on low beam. They rated at 940 max. Lux, which is no small task given that the stock headlights come in at 730 max. Lux.
On high beam, the XBs came in at 29% brighter with 1200 max. Lux vs. the 930 max. Lux for the stock headlights. The Morimoto XBs also grant you a more defined beam pattern in both the low and high beams.
The light output is what makes these headlights stand out from the rest. Since the Mustang S550 comes with LED headlights from stock, most aftermarket headlights will show a dip in brightness from stock. So why pay for worse headlights. Especially considering they may be more expensive than purchasing from the OEM.
As for the taillights, these come in both the standard red and a smoked-out version for your stealth builds.
When you hit the turn signal, they have a sequential signal that rotates the full diameter of the light. These lights also have an extremely bright brake light and feature a unique parking light.
Thankfully, these lights are entirely plug-and-play thanks to the stock mounting points and connectors. On top of that, they should only take about 30 minutes to install.
As standard with Morimoto, these LED lights are equipped with a polycarbonate lens that has been treated with a UV-resistant coating. This is to keep the lights looking like-new forever.
To begin with, open your trunk and unscrew all four of the mounting pins on the plastic panel closest to you. There are two on each side. Work both sides out and you can lift the plastic piece off and up.
Next, remove the now revealed push pin holding in the carpet. Removing this will reveal a connector and three bolts. Remove the connector and the three bolts to loosen the taillight.
Once these are done, you can wiggle out the taillight. Do so gently and pull straight out. In doing so, you will see a rubber grommet. You can pull this out as well and the remaining wiring will come with it.
Repeat for the second taillight.
Take the corresponding taillight side and slide the wiring into the whole. Make sure the grommet is pushed in correctly and that the mounting points slide in properly.
Once that is done, lightly screw in the three bolts and plug in the connector. Before tightening the bolts, test the light and all its functions to ensure they are working properly. Do the same for the other taillight.
After tightening in the three bolts, the final step is to transfer the black plastic piece that sits on top of the stock taillights to the new XB LEDs. This is super easy to do.
Take a pry tool to pop the clips from their hinges. Three of these clips are located on the back, across the top of the headlight housing. Remove these gently. Once removed, place it onto the XB LED housings by snapping the clips in place.
If these have not satisfied your hunger for better automotive lighting, Morimoto has you covered with headlights, fog lights, side markers, super-bright reverse light bulbs, and great interior lighting to brighten your Ford Mustang’s interior.
