Jeep Wrangler JK LED Fog Light Comparison Guide

In this guide, we break down the Jeep Wrangler JK LED fog light options we sell and test every day. We have a lot of fun with Jeep customers because they love their lights. They also love making their rigs stand out. We want to make it easier to choose the right lights for your Jeep. Whether you own a base JK, JKU, JKX, or Rubicon, this guide covers your options. We cover everything from plug and play bulbs to full housing replacements. Brands include Truck Lite, JW Speaker, and Vision X.

Which Jeep Wrangler JK Does This Cover?

These fog light options work with 2007 to 2014 Jeep Wrangler JK models. They also work with JK models from 2007 to current. Your Jeep may use either a 9145 or 2504 fog light bulb. If you are shopping for fog lights, you probably know these numbers already. The 9145 bulb was used from 2007 to 2009. The 2504 bulb became the standard starting in 2009. There are a lot of numbers involved, which can get confusing. We tested these options to help simplify the process. This way, you can choose the right connector and harness before buying.

We sell tons of Jeep headlights, whether it is JW Speaker, Truck-Lite, or GTR. We do light bars, roof mount brackets, and bumpers, so Jeep is a huge platform for us. If you are also thinking about your headlights while you are at it, we have a full write-up on comparing Gen 3 vs Gen 2 LED headlight bulbs on the JK that pairs nicely with any of the fog light upgrades below.

Option 1: Keep the Stock Housing With GTR Lighting LED Bulbs

Before we jump into full housing replacements, let’s talk about the easiest option. If you want to keep the factory fog light housing, we have LED bulb kits. These kits come from GTR Lighting and include Level 1 and Level 2 options. Both kits use your stock fog light housing. Simply remove the factory bulb and install the new LED bulb. The Level 1 option is the GTR Lighting 80 watt 2504 LED bulb. It slides right into the factory housing for a simple upgrade. Plug it in, and you are ready to go. No modifications are required. It is a direct replacement for the factory bulb. The Level 2 option is a super bright LED conversion kit from GTR Lighting. This kit is also completely plug and play. Install the new bulb into your existing housing without any modifications. You also do not need wiring adapters. The kit includes a plug that connects just like the factory bulb.

The GTR Lighting Level 1 80 watt 2504 LED bulb is a plug-and-play upgrade for the stock housing.

If a simple bulb swap is all you want, you can browse the full lineup of S-V.4 LED fog light bulbs for the JK to see the plug-and-play options in one place. For a lot of owners, this is the smartest starting point because it keeps costs down and requires zero fabrication.

Option 2: The Truck-Lite 80275 Housing

Now let’s get into the housing replacements. These are all LED, and the three most common brands we sell for the JK are Truck-Lite, JW Speaker, and Vision X. The first led fog light housing replacement is the Truck-Lite 8275.

If you are running the Truck-Lite 7 inch round LED headlight housing, this is a great one to use because it matches the style and the name brand on the lens of your headlights. It’s a great cost-effective alternative to the other options, and it’s way brighter than your stock housings. Available in chrome only, it has a lumen output of 280, with a UV-resistant, hard-coated polycarbonate lens and a die-cast aluminum housing with a moisture vent. For peace of mind, it comes with a 3-year warranty, is DOT approved, made in the USA, and draws 0.84 amps at 12.8 volts DC.

The Truck-Lite 80275 is a cost-effective chrome LED housing rated at 280 lumens.

Option 3: The JW Speaker 6045 Housing

Next up is the JW Speaker 6045. This led fog light housing produces 750 raw lumens and 500 effective lumens. The lens is made from UV resistant hard-coated polycarbonate and it has a diecast aluminum housing with vents. This product has a lifetime warranty, it is made in the USA, and is DOT approved. This light draws 2.15 amps at 12 volt DC.

The JW Speaker 6045 produces 750 raw lumens and 500 effective lumens using diecast aluminum construction.

Instead of one reflector-type LED like the Truck-Lite, the JW Speaker 6045 uses three vertically positioned LED projectors. They call these a D-shaped projector, and that design gives you a much wider beam pattern than the Truck-Lite unit.

Option 4: The JW Speaker 6145 Housing

The JW Speaker 6145 is the newest LED fog light from this company, and it replaces the older 6045. This one produces 1,080 raw lumens and 610 effective lumens. The lens is made from UV resistant hard-coated polycarbonate, and the housing is made from diecast aluminum. This light is also made in America with a lifetime warranty, meets DOT, ECE, and Transport Canada standards for fog lights, and draws 1.6 amps at 12 volts DC.

The newer JW Speaker 6145 outputs 1,080 raw lumens and 610 effective lumens and meets DOT, ECE, and Transport Canada standards.

The big difference is fitment. The 6045 is 4 1/2 inches round and designed to be mounted in PAR 36 buckets. The 6145 is 4 inches round and specifically designed to replace Chrysler and Jeep fog light housings, so it comes with its own bracket.

The 6145 isn’t limited to the Jeep Wrangler, either. It also fits the PT Cruiser, Grand Cherokee, and many other vehicles. Despite being brighter and including a bracket, the 6145 is still significantly cheaper than its predecessor, the 6045.

More light, a lower price, and a bracket included in the box. That combination is why we almost always steer people toward the 6145 over the 6045.

Option 5: The Vision X Solstice Solo Kit

The last product is the Vision X Jeep Wrangler fog light kit using the 2 inch 10 watt Solstice Solo. It has a raw lumen output of 900 with effective lumens of 350. It has a hard-coated polycarbonate lens and a diecast aluminum housing with a waterproof Deutsch connector. This product uses a single 10 watt Cree LED. Manufactured in Korea, it comes with a lifetime warranty and draws 0.83 amps at 12 volts DC.

The Vision X Solstice Solo kit uses a single 10 watt Cree LED with a waterproof Deutsch connector.

The important thing to understand is that the Vision X Solstice Solo is built as an off-road auxiliary light. It does not have a cutoff line, so it functions more like a spot or flood beam than a street-legal fog light. That makes it great for trails, desert, and snow, but it is not the choice if you want a DOT approved beam for on-road driving. If you want to compare it against other off-road-focused kits, there is also the Baja Designs LED fog light kit at The Retrofit Source and the Morimoto XB LED fog lights for 07-18 Wranglers worth looking at while you shop.

The Truck Lite 8275 and JW Speaker 6045 are very similar in design and fitment. Both are PAR 36 replacement housings with a 4.5 inch diameter. To install them on a Jeep Wrangler JK, you will need additional parts. Both lights require the same two products, which we keep in stock.

Installation: What Extra Parts You Actually Need

The Truck Lite 8275 and JW Speaker 6045 are very similar in design and fitment. Both are PAR 36 replacement housings with a 4.5 inch diameter. To install either one on a Jeep Wrangler JK, you will need a few additional parts. Both lights require the same two products, and we keep both in stock.

The Mounting Bracket

The first thing you need is an aluminum bracket kit. This bracket sandwiches the light and creates factory style mounting points. Once installed, it matches the factory fog light bolt pattern, so the four screws line up with the original fog light mounting points.

There are also plastic alignment tabs on the back of the bracket. These help keep the housing centered in the bumper, and you can adjust them slightly to get the perfect fit.

The bracket clamps the housing from both sides. It contacts the polycarbonate lens on the front and the aluminum housing on the back, holding everything securely in place.

Choosing the Right Wiring Harness

The second thing you need is one of two plug and play wire harnesses. Both of these fog lights have what looks like an H11 style connector on the back, but the Wrangler JK came with two different fog light bulbs depending on the year.

For 2007 to 2009 JKs, you need the harness for the factory 9145 bulb. For 2009 and newer JKs, you need the harness for the factory 2504 bulb. We offer both harnesses, and you can find them at Headlight Revolution.

The Truck Lite Bracket Free Install

There is also a trick with the Truck Lite housing that can eliminate the need for the mounting brackets altogether. You can pull the wire through the front of the bumper and pressure fit the housing directly into the plastic opening.

It goes in pretty hard, but people who have done it say it works really well. I would not guarantee that it will never fall out, though, so you may want to glue the housing in place if you choose this method.

The nice thing about this approach is that you can skip the brackets entirely. Just grab the correct plug and play wire harness, route it through the front of the bumper, and stuff the Truck Lite housing into the opening. It is a much simpler installation, although the bracket method is the better choice if you want a more secure, factory style mounting solution.

Both PAR 36 style housings mount using the same aluminum bracket kit at the factory fog light location.

The Recessed Fit: What to Expect

One thing to know before you commit to this route: when you mount the 8275 or the 6045 in the factory location with the bracket kit, the housings sit recessed. The original fog light lens came up to the lip of the bumper opening, but the new lens sits a hair over an inch further back. On a white table you can see a small gap down at the bottom, but once the bumper is installed on the Jeep and everything behind it is black and dark, you are not going to notice it. We tested the beam both ways, and the recessed light source does not make much of a difference in output.

The good news is that the newer JW Speaker 6145 and the Vision X Solstice Solo kit already come with brackets, so those extra parts are not needed. Vision X offers this mounting kit with a Solstice on each side, and they also have a version with their newer Optimus for more of a long-distance light. The JW Speaker 6145 is plug and play for 2007 to 2009 Jeeps with the 9145 type bulb, or it comes with an adapter harness you can hard wire if yours uses the 2504 style. If you have the 2504, you can either hard wire it with what they include or use our plug-and-play adapter kit. And if you buy the 6145 Jeep Wrangler fog light kit from us, we throw in the harness for free.

Beam Pattern and Light Output Comparison

When we lit the Truck-Lite fog light up, you can see the lower half does not light up at all. All you get is the top half illuminated with a single LED. The JW Speaker 6045 has a much wider beam pattern than the Truck-Lite, so you get a little bit of side cutoff due to the housing being recessed and the light hitting the inside of the bumper, but it is negligible. These lights are still extremely bright and very impressive.

So why would you buy the Truck-Lite over the JW Speaker? First of all, the Truck-Lite 8275 is significantly less expensive, but it also puts out significantly less light. The main reason to go Truck-Lite is matching your gear: if you already run the Truck-Lite 7 inch round LED headlights, which are great by the way, you probably want matching fog lights. Otherwise, since the 6145 from JW Speaker is way brighter and a lot cheaper than the 6045, that is the housing most people should be looking at.

The JW Speaker 6145 gives a wide DOT approved beam while the Vision X Solstice Solo is built for off-road auxiliary lighting.

To sum it up: if you want the cheapest upgrade and want to keep the factory housing, go with the GTR Lighting Level 1 or Level 2 bulbs. If you want a name-brand match for Truck-Lite headlights, the 8275 works. If you want the best combination of brightness, price, and easy mounting for a DOT approved fog light, the JW Speaker 6145 is our pick. And if you are building a trail rig and want off-road auxiliary lighting without a cutoff line, the Vision X Solstice Solo kit is the way to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

What years of Jeep Wrangler JK does this fog light guide cover?

The guide covers the 2007 to 2014 Jeep Wrangler JK, including Rubicon, JKU, and JKX variants, which use either the 9145 style bulb (2007-2009) or the 2504 style bulb (2009-current).

Can I just replace the stock fog light bulb instead of the whole housing?

Yes, GTR Lighting offers a Level 1 and Level 2 LED bulb kit that plugs directly into the stock 9145 or 2504 fog light housing with no modifications or wiring adapters needed.

What extra parts are needed to install the Truck-Lite 8275 or JW Speaker 6045?

Both are PAR 36 replacement housings 4.5 inches in diameter, so they require an aluminum bracket kit to match the factory mounting points plus a plug-and-play wire harness for either the 9145 or 2504 style connector.

How is the JW Speaker 6145 different from the older 6045?

The 6145 is 4 inches round instead of 4.5 inches, comes with its own mounting bracket so no separate bracket kit is needed, produces more raw and effective lumens, and is less expensive than the 6045 it replaces.

Is the Vision X Solstice Solo kit legal for on-road driving?

No, the transcript describes it as an auxiliary off-road light with a spot or flood beam and no cutoff line, making it better suited for trails, desert, or snow rather than street use like the DOT approved JW Speaker 6145.
