They are FINALLY here, the Morimoto XB LED Tail lights for the 2017-2022 Ford Super Duty. We have been eagerly awaiting their arrival and can now show them to you all. These are fully LED and what is really cool about them, is that they will fit any Super Duty regardless of whether you have the halogen or LED OEM tail lights or BLISS system.

Although these are plug-and-play housings, there are some specifics as to which connectors you use and which you do not. We have broken down what you need to do for each housing type to make this process really easy.

ABOUT

Morimoto has been hard at work producing yet another great LED tail light housing. They wanted to ensure that all versions of the 2017-2022 Ford Super Duty were covered. As a result, there are plug-and-play connections to make the process free of any soldering and splicing.

As per usual with Morimoto, these feature modern styling that draws from existing designs. This gives the light a futuristic, yet contemporary design, ensuring these will only age with grace. While we are on the aging subject, the UV-polycarbonate lens will protect your tail lights from the Sun’s harmful rays.

You also have the option of choosing between two different versions of the tail light. One has the matte graphite finish that many Morimoto housings utilize, and the other has a standard red finish. There is the option for those wanting something more aggressive-looking, or closer to the OEM look.

The prominent light blades within the taillight are illuminated from the rear with integrated TIR (Total Internal Reflector) optics that serve the brake light, parking light, and turn signal. The optics may be molded from red polycarbonate, they do illuminate amber when you put on your turn signal.

When you put your truck in reverse, the fully integrated, and fully LED reverse light comes on. The eight LEDs emit light into the reflector-based optic to create a reverse light brighter than most factory taillights.

Unlike most Morimoto housings, this Super Duty tail does not have a sequential turn signal.

Tools Needed for the Job:
8mm Socket
Impact/Ratcheting Wrench
Torx Screw
Work Mat or Similar Surface

Removing the Tails

Open your bed door and remove the two 8mm bolts at the top and bottom of your headlight with an Impact/Ratcheting Wrench.

NOTE: All other screws and bolts should be removed/installed by using hand tools. Using a power tool can damage your taillights.

Once those bolts are removed, you can pry the OEM taillight outward from the truck. Then, unplug the factory connectors.

Completing the following steps requires you to rest your taillight face down. We recommend using a towel or microfiber cloth to prevent the tails from being scratched. Alternatively, we just started selling this handy Morimoto work mat that is perfect for these kinds of jobs.

Transfer the BLIS Module

If you have a taillight that is equipped with Ford’s BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) function, then this section of instruction is for you.

If you do not have BLIS, click HERE for the 2017-2019 halogen taillight install and HERE for the 2020-2022 halogen taillight install.

To transfer the BLIS Module, remove three 7mm bolts on the silver plate. Remove the plat to reveal the BLIS Module. Remove the two Phillips screws on the underside of the BLIS Module. You can then pull the Module away and unclip it from the OEM connector.

Grab your preferred XB Tail light option. Remove the four 7mm bolts on the silver plate on the rear of the XB Tail light. Remove the plate and grab the BLIS Module and plug it into the XB plate. You can then screw in the BLIS Module using two T20 Torx bit screws that come with the XB Taillight.

Looking at the XB Tail light connector, if you have a 2017-2019 Super Duty, you will need to plug the purple wire into the red wire. If you have a 2020-2022 Super Duty, the purple wire should be connected to the yellow wire.

You can then thread the wiring into the housing and reinstall the four 7mm bolts.

2017-2019 Super Duty with Halogen Tails and without BLIS

First, the kit comes with four resistors, two unique ones for each tail light. If you have the 2017-2019 model with halogen taillights and NO BLIS, you will only use the “7.5 O / 50 W,” one on each taillight.

To install this, place it over the two screw holes on the silver plate. Screw in the two screws and washers that come with the kit.

From here, you can connect the main multi-pin adapter to the taillight. For this version of the tail light, only use connectors #1 (both) and #3. These will plug right into your OEM connectors. You will also need to connect the female silver connector to the matching connector on the resistor you installed.

You will also see a bullet-shaped black connector. This is for the Morimoto Back-Up Boost Bar to be plugged in to. If you own one, you can click HERE to see how to install it. Otherwise, you can get your own on our website.

Otherwise, you can now reinstall your taillights back onto your Super Duty.

(Optional) Morimoto XB Backup Light Boost Bar Install

Install this before completing your tail light installation.

Remove the license plate from your truck. Route the wiring through the plastic part of the rear bumper. You will need to drill a hole for the wire to go through. You can place the Backup Boost Bar over where it will sit, and mark where the wire will best route through the bumper.

Once that has been drilled, you can place the Backup Boost Bar over the plate holes, place your license plate over the Backup Boost Bar, and then re-screw in the license plate in place.

Grab your wiring and route it through the underside of the vehicle and up to the taillight.

Here, you can plug the wire into the spare black connector at the end of a red wire. Remove the cap and plug in the Backup Boost Bar.
