Ford Super Duty Fully LED Headlights: Morimoto XB LED

The king of all Ford pickup trucks, the Super Duty, has its own XB LED headlight. Morimoto knows how to bring top-tier lighting to the best cars and trucks on the market. They bring OEM quality housings with better than OEM performance.

Offered in a white and now an amber daytime running light (DRL) model, these fully LED headlights are a perfect upgrade for your Super Duty. We love that the factory connectors combined with the stock mounting points make this headlight a plug-and-play installation process. Not to mention, the modern styling that really revitalizes the look of the truck.

ABOUT

The Ford Super Duty already has an incredible road presence. If it is not the immense size of this 6,000lb truck, then the 6.2L 2V or 6.7L 4V V8 engine is sure to make itself noticed. With the Morimoto XB LED headlights, you can fill the performance gap that the stock headlights leave.

The prominent DRL and tri-LED projectors make this headlight stand out from the rest of the aftermarket offerings. Overall, they really update the overall look of the vehicle to make this almost 6-year-old truck appear new.

As standard for many of Morimoto’s top-of-the-line XB LED housings, this Super Duty headlight boasts a DRL that doubles as an amber sequential turn signal. Other cars will not be able to miss you with how bright the DRLs look, even in the daytime. The DRLs will also dim to 50 percent brightness when you turn your lights on.

As usual, you will find the excellent sequential turn signals that are the standard fanfare for Morimoto’s XB LED headlight line-up. If you are not a fan of it, you can easily opt for a standard blinker by just unplugging a wire.

Performance

Now that we have talked about the styling, the biggest draw of these headlights is their incredible performance. Morimoto has made a name for themselves with their fully LED housings that have consistently outshined the OEM counterparts (many of which cost about as much as the XBs).

We put these lights to our usual test. First, we pull our truck into the garage and park it perpendicular to the wall at 25 feet. To gauge the brightness of the light, we run a digital Lux meter across the beam pattern in search of the brightest point. This is not 100 percent accurate to real-world performance, but it will give you a good idea of how bright these headlights are.

To set a standard for the test, we measured the OEM halogen headlights on the Super Duty. It came in at 290 max. Lux for the low beam and 450 max. Lux for the high beam. These numbers seem high, but this is about the average for OEM headlights and should be expected when testing new stock headlights.

With the Morimoto XB LED headlights for the 2011-2016 Ford Super Duty, you are getting 2080 max. Lux on low beam. That comes out to a 617 percent increase over the stock low beams.

On high beam, the XB LED emits 2120 max. Lux, a 371 percent increase over stock.

Beyond the incredible performance, you are also getting a much more capable beam pattern that caters to you and other drivers. The beam pattern allows for a wider range of view, more depth to the projection, and reduced glare for oncoming drivers thanks to the stepped pattern.

INSTALL

Tools Needed for the Job:
10mm Bit
Impact/Ratcheting Wrench
10in Extension
Extended Screwdriver (Optional)

Open your hood and remove the four 10mm bolts located at the top of your grill.

Take a long screwdriver to release the five clips holding in the base of the grill. You can now remove the grill.

There are four 10mm bolts holding in your OEM headlight housings. One is located on the top of the headlight housing, two are found behind a cover to the interior side of the headlight, and one bolt is underneath the headlight. It can be reached by putting your wrench extension between the bumper and headlight housing.

From there, you can lift the headlight out of the vehicle. Unclip all the factory wire connections before fully removing the headlight housing.

Wiring

Next, you will need to run the DRL harness to the fuse box and to each XB LED headlight. Remove the following fuse and install the supplied fuse tap. Run the longest wire to the furthest headlight and the shortest to the closest headlight.

On the rear of the headlights, you will find the turn signal harness. If you unplug it, you will have the sequential turn signal. If you leave them plugged in, you will have the standard blinker signal. All the other plugs will plug into the OEM connectors, and one will plug into the DRL harness.

Match all the connections and install the XB LED headlight into the vehicle. Be sure to test the lights before buttoning your truck back together. Furthermore, if you experience any hyper flashing, check your taillights. Sometimes when you have aftermarket taillights that were not designed for the truck, it can cause hyper flashing.

CONCLUSION

One of the best trucks on the market deserves the best lighting upgrades on the market. With the Morimoto XB LED, you can accomplish just that! These headlights are fantastic, and they really blow the OEM housing out of the water in performance, design, and safety.
