Morimoto has returned with another fully LED headlight for the 2009-2014 Ford F-150/Raptor. Until now, Morimoto only had a housing with a white DRL. But now you can get one of their most popular headlight housings with an amber DRL.
Being into headlight mods is often all about DIY jobs and yelling at your friend for holding the flashlight wrong, but not everyone has the time or the tools to build their own headlights. So, you might look into something like a pre-made assembly. That is where the Morimoto XB LED headlights come into play.
Today we are looking at Morimoto’s new XB LED headlight for the 2009-2014 Ford F-150 that now comes with an amber daytime running light (DRL). The DRL really adds to the look of your vehicle and brings a strong unique facelift to your truck.
Turn your low beams on and the DRL dims down 50%, making it street legal. Not to mention the sequential turn signal in the center of the light.
If you are upgrading headlights looking for increased light output, the XB LED headlights certainly do not lack in that department. The LED projectors on these headlights are sure to light up the road far better than any stock assembly you have ever seen. They have an intense cutoff line on them that provides wide visibility and depth.
Notably, there are three LED projector low beams that sit in the center of the housing. Near the outer edge, you get an LED amber side marker light. In place of your turn signal, there is a reflector housing for a bright LED high beam.
There is nothing to replace on the backside of these turn signals low beam, high beam side markers. It is all integrated into one plug-and-play system. Stock assemblies, come with a one-year warranty from the factory. Morimoto headlight assemblies come with a 5-year warranty.
Before we get into how the lights perform, check out the Morimoto 4Banger fog lights and A-Pillar mounts that we have on the F-150. The 4Banger is one of the best LED pod lights on the market right now. The compact size, performance, and build quality contribute to a fantastic product from Morimoto Lighting. For the F-150, you can get a 4Banger as an integrated fog light and with an A-Pillar bracket.
Speaking of performance, we put these lights to our usual test. First, we pull our truck into the garage and park it perpendicular to the wall at 25 feet. To gauge the brightness of the light, we run a digital Lux meter across the beam pattern in search of the brightest point. This is not 100 percent accurate to real-world performance, but it will give you a good idea of how bright these headlights are.
As the benchmark, we tested the OEM halogen headlights from the F-150. We tested these at 240 max. Lux on the low beam and 420 max. Lux for the high beam. This is about average for OEM headlights and should be expected when testing new stock headlights.
Stock Low Beam | Stock High Beam |
We did the same for the F-150 equipped with a set of Morimoto XB headlights. On low beam, they came in at 710 max. Lux, which is 195 percent brighter than the stock headlights. You are also getting a sharper beam pattern with greater width and distribution of light intensity.
When you turn on the high beams, the XB headlights destroy the stock headlights with a 157 percent increase. The XBs were tested at 1080 max. Lux. Once again, Morimoto has crafted an excellent beam pattern for the high beam setting.
Tools Needed for the Job:
10mm Socket
Impact/Ratcheting Wrench
To begin, open your hood and find the two 10mm bolts located at the top of your headlight housing. Remove those.
Find the 10mm bolt on the inner side of the headlight.
You can then pry the headlight from the truck and disconnect the factory H13 connector, turn signal, and side marker light.
Repeat for both sides.
With every Morimoto headlight, they include a fuse tap DRL harness. To install it, remove the 10amp fuse shown below and install the fuse tap.
You can then route the shorter DRL harness to the nearest headlight, and the longest DRL harness to the farthest headlight.
Once you have done that, you can connect the factory connectors and the DRL harness to the XB LED headlight.
You will notice that there are two extra plugs. This is the turn signal setting. If you leave it unplugged, you will have a sequential turn signal and if you plug it in you will have a standard blinking signal.
At this point, you can reinstall your headlight and test all the functions before fully putting your truck back together.
And there you have it, your new Morimoto XB LED headlights are installed on your 2009-2014 Ford F-150. What is cool is that these headlights will also work on the F-150s of these years that were equipped with HID headlights. If you have a premium model or a Raptor, then these lights are a great option. If the amber DRL is not your thing, be sure to check out the white DRL version.
